Reasons for Being Vegetarian

The Vegetarian Society of Georgia seeks to clearly present and represent the grounds for vegetarianism in order to advocate this way of life.  Here, we've accumulated some of the Southern wisdom of our members and grouped it into the 4 main reasons for being vegetarian.

  • Health reasons are perhaps the most well-known. They include positive benefits, e.g. the consumption of extra anti-oxidants, as well as negative benefits, e.g. the avoidance of the dangers of meat-borne bacteria.
  • Animal welfare arguments are nearly as well-known.
  • Rather less recognized are the Spiritual and Environmental roots of vegetarianism.

Nevertheless, these types of reasons are on a par with the other 2 pillars of vegetarianism.

But, don't take our word for it. For more information about reasons for being vegetarian, try these non-VSG sites:

Also, check out the American Dietetic Association's position paper on Vegetarianism
