Brenda Davis
Brenda Davis,
Registered Dietician, will have 3 appearances in Atlanta during her 40-state, 4
province tour through the US and Canada. Details on each appearance are provided
below. Brenda is a leader in her field and an internationally acclaimed speaker.
She is a past chair of the Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group of the
American Dietetic Association (ADA). Brenda is author of five books Becoming
Vegetarian (new edition just out) and Becoming Vegan, Dairy-free and Delicious,
and the newly released Defeating Diabetes. She has also authored numerous
professional and lay articles, spoken at several ADA Conferences and the
National Nutrition Conferences in several countries.

Vegetarian Nutrition. "Cutting Edge Vegetarian Nutrition" goes into the fine
details of the nutrients of concern to vegetarians or vegans - specifically
protein, iron, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and essential fatty acids.
Information covered in the talk can be found in her books The New Becoming
Vegetarian and Becoming Vegan. The lecture is also suitable for non-vegetarians

Optimal Diet -
during Life Groceries' mostly raw brunch "Eating for Life...constructing the
optimal diet" discusses the consequences of our food choices to human health,
and is extremely well received. It addresses current knowledge about diet and
disease, and practical ways to modify our diets to minimize disease risk and

Defeating
Diabetes (great to hear if you have diabetes or not because she is talking about
the right way to eat) "Defeating Diabetes" examines the epidemic of type 2
diabetes, and how individuals can make the diet and lifestyle choices that will
give them the best possible chance of defeating this disease. This discussion
challenges many of the commonly held beliefs about diabetes, including the
optimal quantity and sources of carbohydrates, fiber, protein and fat, including
essential fatty acids. All information presented can be found in her newly

CORPORATE GLOBALIZATION: Trading Away Our Right to
Protect Animals
Dr. Michael Greger will share his research about how global trade agreements and institutions such as GATT, NAFTA, and the World Trade Organization (WTO) have affected animals. He will offer his understanding of what impact the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (the expansion of NAFTA) will have on animals as well. This is a riveting and thought-provoking talk, infused with vast historical background and even humor, about what may be the greatest threat ever posed to animal protection. 45 min. Closest parking deck: Fishburne Deck From North Decatur Road heading TOWARDS BRIARCLIFF ROAD, turn RIGHT onto Clifton Road, then left at first stoplight (Fishburne Road I'm pretty sure), stay LEFT (NOT DOWN THE HILL), and straight into the parking deck. Then ask anyone where Cox Hall or the clock tower is. This is $1 or $2 an hour for parking. Free parking is also available, illegally, at Emory Village, i.e. CVS, etc. From MARTA, take bus #6 from either Lindbergh or Candler Park MARTA train stations. Ask to get off at Emory's center of campus (the hospital stop will do).

Kate Smolski of the Georgia Sierra Club is giving a presentation at Cameli's restaurant, 1263 Glenwood Ave. S.E., Atlanta (same place we had our volunteer meeting in early summer). Kate is a vegan who volunteered to do a slideshow on forest protection, and will also discuss how agriculture affects natural resources. The program is free, and anyone who wants to stay afterwards for dinner will simply order and pay on their own.

A Celebration of Life!
Spread the word & spare the bird! The Vegetarian Society of Georgia's annual Thanksgiving dinner will be held at Inman Park United Methodist Church. The church is located at 1015 Edgewood Avenue in Atlanta (click link below for directions).
The event is open to everyone. Guests are asked to bring a vegan (no flesh, eggs or dairy) entree, side dish, salad or dessert that will serve 8-10 people. Utensils, drinks, and dinnerware are provided. Children's activities will be offered, so bring the whole family and join in this celebration of healthy, humane living.
Admission is free, but please RSVP no later than November 20th so that we will know how many people to expect at the event.
August 25, 2001, 6:00pm - Cookout at the home of Cheryl McAuliffe & Dick Bridges
We will be hosting a burger cookout at the home of Cheryl McAuliffe and Dick Bridges. VSG will provide the burgers, and those attending should bring a Vegan side dish or dessert to serve 8-10 people. These burgers are some of the most delicious veggie burgers you'll ever taste!!
The hosts will provide beverages, so all you have to bring is yourself, your food, a serving spoon for your dish, and friends and/or family.
Since VSG is providing the burgers, we must know in advance how many are coming. Please RSVP with your name and the total number of adults and children in your party . We need this info by August 22nd. Please call the VSG line at 770-662-4019 (24 hours a day) to RSVP.
Cheryl and Dick host a couple of events for VSG each year and are wonderful hosts with a beautiful home. Plan to join us and enjoy an evening of delicious food with friendly people. Invite your friends to attend with you!

Bring a vegan dish to share (this contains no eggs, no dairy and no flesh) that will serve 8-10 people. Also bring a serving spoon.
To save on the waste of disposable items, bring your own plates, utensils, napkins, beverages.
Cost: $3 for each adult (this fee is to help pay for the rental of the facility). Children under 12 free.

Toxic metals, a very common cause of chronic disease in Georgia - how to test for it and how to treat it.
Milton Fried, M.D., of the Milton Fried Medical Clinic in Atlanta is an expert in the use of Chinese herbs and prescribes them, as well as traditional medicne, for his patients. He believes in treating the whole person and getting to the root of a problem. He has an impressive education - physical therapy masters degree, chiropractic degree and M.D., and is truly a wealth of information.
Dr. Fried spoke to VSG several years ago and is counted as one of our best speakers ever. Don't miss this very informative evening!

Please join us for this event and bring your favorite board games with you! After eating, we will play games and get to know each other better. If you bring kids, bring their favorite game too.

This event is at the home of Delta Fairington. Directions:
Going South on 75/85, take the 10th Street/14th Street Techwood exit, turn right on 14th Street (you'll see a large Wolf Camera store). Go less than 1 mile and look for the Georgia Lighting building on the left. Turn here (McMillian Street). Cross the first street (Ethel) and the house is on the next left-hand corner, Calhoun and McMillian. 515 Calhoun Street (the address is above the door in stained glass).
If you will be going North on 75/85, take the same exit, but turn left on 10th Street, crossing over the freeway. Turn a sharp right on Hemphill. Hemphill is actually the wide right and it will say McMillian once you make that sharp right. Cross the first small street and the house is on the next corner.

"Not-So-Ordinary Fruits and Vegetables" will be the program topic at the
next VSG event on Sat., Jan. 13 at 7:00 pm at the Epworth United Methodist Church, 1561 McLendon Ave. in Atlanta. The church is near Little Five Points.
This will be a vegan potluck followed by the program presented by Case
Lichtveld, produce manager for Harry's Farmers Market. He'll give all kinds
of information on how to choose and cook unusual produce. Can you tell if a
snow puff is ripe? How do you cook snake beans? And what do you do with
tindora? Come find out!
