About Us
Vegetarian Society of Georgia (VSG): The place to learn, socialize, and make a difference! Some Background The Vegetarian Society
of Georgia is an educational and social resource group for vegetarians and for anyone else who's interested in learning more about vegetarianism. It provides an excellent opportunity for the vegetarian to experience a sense of
belonging with those who share his or her life-style choice, and for the aspiring vegetarian, there's no better way to learn about a vegetarian diet. The Society was founded in September 1990, and has grown steadily
since then. Our Meetings
We meet frequently, and those meetings are often a potluck dinner with a vegetarian-related program.
Sometimes, for variety, we have a catered dinner or dine as a group at a veggie-friendly restaurant.
Meetings are open to anyone with an interest in vegetarianism. If you haven't made the switch to vegetarianism, we
encourage you to join us and learn more about a plant-based diet from the varied experiences of our members. Meeting and interacting with other vegetarians is an excellent way to make the transition an easier one.
At
board meetings, typically held on the second Sunday of odd months, each VSG officer and committee head provides a report of activities in their area of responsibility. In addition, the business and planning of the Society is
discussed. The meetings follow a set agenda and last for approximately 90 minutes. Any VSG member who is interested in getting involved and volunteering to help with VSG functions is encouraged to attend these meetings. The
vitality and effectiveness of the Society relies on the participation of all our members and there is no better way to get to know other VSG members than to get involved with our programs.
About Our Members
Our members are vegetarian for many reasons - some because of health concerns, some because of compassion for animals. Others have chosen vegetarianism because
of the impact our meat-centered agriculture has on the environment. And, of course, some are vegetarian because of spiritual or religious beliefs. Whatever the reason, we all have similar food choices, and this creates a common
bond among us.
Our members include a wide range of ages, races, religions and cultures. Other Activities
Some of our activities involve educating others to the myriad positive effects of a vegetarian diet. One of our outreach programs is our speakers' bureau, through which we provide programs to interested groups on a number of
subjects related to vegetarianism. Another is our "Going Vegetarian" class which was initiated in 1991. This is offered in metro Atlanta continuing education schools, and is taught by our members. We also teach cooking
classes in many of those same schools.
We sponsored two visits to Atlanta of nationally known speaker, Howard Lyman and got excellent media attention for his message. We also spread the word about the benefits of a
vegetarian diet by providing a table of thought-provoking information at various community events. This is a terrific way to meet new people and answer their questions about a plant-based diet.
Every Thanksgiving Day we have a mouth-watering potluck feast, complete with all the traditional goodies. This is a popular event, with a large turnout, where we stuff ourselves instead of the poor turkey.
Membership Advantages
We hope you'll want to become part of the Vegetarian Society. As a VSG member, you'll receive our newsletter, which is filled with
vegetarian-related information, volunteer opportunities, and information about our activities. We list corporate members' names, addresses and phone numbers in each newsletter. Members also receive a free copy of our membership
directory annually.
Members receive discounts at a variety of restaurants and veggie-friendly businesses, and we are constantly expanding those discounts. At the present time most of these are in the metro Atlanta
area. For that reason, those living outside the metro Atlanta area have the option of becoming a newsletter subscriber only, instead of a full member. Those people, however, do not receive member discounts.
We're All Volunteers
All our work is done by volunteers; we have no paid staff. Volunteering is an excellent way to meet new friends and to feel instantly like an integral
part of the group. VSG programs and activities can't exist without good volunteers, and our committees welcome new participants. Be assured that whatever your skills or interests, there's a place within VSG for you to make a
difference and at the same time, to develop and expand your special talents.
We want and need your time and your ideas.
